Ode to Spring

Sciurid Love

Marmota monax.
Land-beaver, woodchuck, whistle-pig
Seeks the glowing embrace of Spring.
Doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink, only
uses recreational drugs as prescribed

Must be willing to relocate,
like feeling your claws
in the sweet soil,
have good posture,
be able to carry a tune.

Will rise from his sepulcher,
every day,
damp and cold,
only to greet you,
to welcome you home
to the alfalfa fields
you know you want.

Come bring the thaw.
Winter has left the burrow
big enough for two
Mighty incisors will
make you bark and squeal,
whistle and grind,
into Summer.
